Why I started DSIT
I've worked in IT since 2001. Most of what I know, I learned when things went wrong.
For ten years I looked after the systems at a US-owned medical school in the Caribbean. After a hurricane cut all communications and road access on the island, I set up a portable satellite link on my own so hundreds of stranded students could keep studying. I got to campus by boat every day of the recovery.
DSIT started as my evening and weekend work. Over the years I looked after local businesses and two pharmacies, and in 2003 I built a client's network that I still manage today.
Early in my career I taught CompTIA A+ classes to people starting from zero. It's why I explain things in plain English, and why I write down everything I do.
In 2016 I moved to Canada. Ottawa is home now, and in 2026 DSIT became a registered company.
Clinics remind me of the campus and the pharmacies. The information is sensitive, the day is fully booked, and there's no good time for things to break.
